4 Ways to Help Yourself When Feeling Down!

Different people have different ways of dealing with feeling sad, depressed, “down”, or “bleh” as some people I know have described it. Everybody deals with negative emotions and feelings in different ways, and that is an important thing to note.

Depending on who you are as a person, you will deal with problems in life in different ways. This also means that not every method that works for one person will work for another person to cheer them up when they are sad.

Some people might exercise if they feel bad to sort of channel out those negative emotions, other people might eat foods they enjoy to make them happy. Others might turn to self destructive behaviors such as alcohol, drugs, or other addictions such as gambling addiction.

However, before we even begin to talk about some ways people could use in order to try and help themselves feel better, we need to acknowledge that we are all human. It is okay to feel sad, depressed, down, or whatever other word you want to use for it.

Even if you cannot find a single thing that cheers you up, don’t feel bad about that. It is okay to feel the way you do and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Emotions are just a natural part of life.

Now, there is of course the exception of if you actually have something medically wrong with you. If you are feeling sad or depressed for days or weeks at a time, then it could be beneficial to talk to a professional. They are there to help you!

But, without further ado, here are some ways I have found to help you out when you are feeling down in the dumps and need a little “pick me up.”

Cry

The first thing I want to share to help you feel better is to cry. This may sound extremely obvious, but crying is still stigmatized for many people. This is especially true for men who are usually raised with the idea that they shouldn’t cry.

This could not be further from the truth, however. Crying is a perfectly acceptable way to vent emotion and express yourself. There are even scientific studies to back the fact that crying makes you feel better.

Now, if you are worried about, or feel embarrassed about crying, then there are a couple things you could do. The first is just to be alone for a little bit while you cry. If there is nobody around then there is no reason to feel embarrassed.

Don’t worry about not being completely comfortable crying in public yet. That could come in time as there is really nothing to be ashamed of, but you can go be by yourself for now. Or perhaps, with just someone important to you who could comfort you.

Listen to Music

Something that I find can really help deal with feeling sad or depressed or down is listening to music that expresses the feeling you are currently dealing with.

This works because it gives your mind something to connect with and you can sort of channel or express your emotions through the song you're listening to. Almost as if the song is a key and it unlocks the depth of what you are feeling.

Not only does this work for feeling sad, but it can work for other emotions as well. Anger can be channeled through a song that helps you express that anger in your mind. This is a great way to help deal with emotions, that isn't at someone’s expense.

Music doesn’t just help you channel emotions you are currently feeling though. You can also use it to do the complete opposite and change how you are feeling entirely!

For instance, if you listen to really happy music, it can help you feel more happy and upbeat because you flow with the song. I find this doesn’t always work as well as the first method, but it is worth a try.

As I said, different things will work for different people. So what doesn’t work for me could work really well for someone else. Or, something that works really well for me could not work at all for someone else.

Express Yourself in Reverse

Expressing yourself in the inverse of how you feel has been shown, and I found through personal experience, to have a great effect on your mood.

Now, some of you might be wondering what exactly it means to express yourself in reverse, and that is a great question. It essentially means exactly what it says, so strings attached or tricks about it.

It simply means that you should try expressing the opposite emotion from the one you are currently not wanting to feel. Do you feel sad? Then express happiness physically and it could help you start to feel happy.

If you don’t believe me, then give it a try! Whenever you are sad, just stand up tall, throw your arms up in the air and fake the broadest smile you can. Squint your eyes and really make it feel like a real smile!

Do something you know you have fun doing.  Video games, blogging, watch a movie, pulling the slots at the online Slotocash Casino, listen to your fav band.  These will get you smiling for sure.

Put your hands on your hips and strike a power pose! You may find that you feel a bit better. Perhaps even a bit happy now! Or then again, you might not, and that's okay. However, for many people, it could really help lift your spirits.

Studies show that smiling has a chemical effect on your brain. Hormones and neurotransmitters are released and they can boost your mood and make you feel happier.

These studies also show mixed results, however, so don’t worry if it doesn’t work for you! Just keep trying things and you will find something that works well for you eventually! I’m almost certain of it.

Clean Up

The last tip I have for you is to clean up your mind by cleaning up your environment. Our mood is heavily affected by what is going on around us. So, it is important to have a happy house if we want to feel happy feelings.

So, clean up any messes that are around your house. Even if you don’t think they bother you, they could be negatively affecting your mood subconsciously.

Next, you should make sure you have a lot of natural light in your house or room. If you leave all the blinds and curtains closed, it can make a house feel claustrophobic and entrapping.

This could help lead you to feel depressed or sad, and you should try and avoid it. Even a lot of artificial light isn’t good enough. There is just something about sunlight and the outside that improves your mood.

Next, clean yourself up if you haven’t in a while. Take a shower and clean yourself well. Put on deodorant or perfume, or whatever else will make you feel good about yourself. Then put on some fresh clean clothes that fit you well.

You will find this is a huge mood booster and can help take you out of that feeling of being down in the dumps. The final thing to do is to shave if you want to, or for the ladies, you could do any other little detail things that “complete” a look you like.

That will just be like the cherry on top that makes you feel good about yourself and good about your life. So, drink a glass of water, and appreciate life!
