For many, sport is more than just a hobby: it’s a way of life. With so many big sporting tournaments broadcast every year, it’s natural that avid sports fans want a dedicated room to indulge their passion. Home cinema rooms are common, but with a little effort you can design the perfect space to support your team.

#1 Start with the television

Your foremost concern is picture quality, so the television will probably be your largest investment. It can be tempting simply to opt for the biggest screen you can find, but the decision is more nuanced than that. The refresh rate on sports coverage is quite high, and while 60Hz will suffice, pushing the boat to 120Hz makes a big difference. Similarly, the depth of color plays a big role. The deep greens of the pitch, kit color - it all helps to build immersion. Go for 4K OLED where possible. The gorgeous color rendering of these televisions will bring any event to life.

#2 Opt for surround sound

After picture quality comes sound. This is often overlooked, but if you want a truly immersive experience you’ll need to move away from inbuilt television speakers. These have advanced a great deal over the years, but none will ever be able to compete with a fully fledged surround sound system. Using multiple speakers placed strategically around the room you’ll be about to create an immersive soundscape that transports you to the match. Better still, invest in some soundproofing to keep the noise of the outside world at bay.

#3 Leave space for gadgets

The true sports fan is likely to be interested in more than just the game. You’ll want news, stats, player profiles and to communicate with like minded fans. Ensure that you have adequate charging ports for mobile phones and iPads (nothing’s worse than having to leave the room to find a charger, only to miss a big moment!). Include room for a computer (or at least a laptop) so that you can access all the latest stats, social media and betting sites if you want to have a flutter.

#4 Get the perfect lighting

More subtle, but the lighting makes a huge difference to how you enjoy sport (or any television show, for that matter). Overhead lighting is notoriously harsh and creates bright spots and glare on the television screen. Instead of large, central lighting on the ceiling, opt for table lamps or even floor lights. Using several light sources means that you can adjust them as you see fit, ensuring your viewing experience is never compromised.

#5 Include ample seating

Sports are best enjoyed as part of a group. The group element is what makes the likes of soccer, basketball and hockey so popular. You should take this into account by including plenty of seating, enough for friends and family to join you for a big match. Soft sofas and easy chairs (some people even opt for bean bags) make great additions to the room and ensure a casual, laid back vibe.
