Looking after your edges is essential if you want your hair to look its best and stay healthy. Edges refer to the baby hairs that sit along the hairline. It’s new growth and always arrives after a cut. As you would expect, your hair is continuing to grow.

It’s worth noting that edges are commonly found on women with dark-coloured hair, it’s not generally an issue for people with naturally blond hair.  Many people ignore them as they are simply a sign your hair is growing. However, you can also embrace your edges and style them to add a little more panache to your hair.

The Edge Trend

Surprisingly, hair edges have been styled since the 1920s. In many cases, gel was used to hold the baby hairs downward. It created a sparkling smooth edge with more than a passing resemblance to a mannequin.

Although people subsequently lost interest in the trend, it resurged again in the 1960s and again in the 1990s. Today it is once again popular.

If you’re going to style your edges you need the right tools. It’s a good idea to take a look at these GHD combs and brushes. They will help you make your edges do what they are supposed to.

There are different edge styles:

  • Swirly
Swirly baby hairs are transformed into works of art with a little gel. The edges are smoothed down but they are also swirled, to create unique effects at the bottom of the hairline. The look is very personal and you can change it regularly.
  • Messy
The messy edge is designed to help you cultivate the just got out of bed image. Unsurprisingly, you want the edges to look messy. The best way to do this is to sleep with a silk scarf tied around the base of your hair. This will allow your edges to be ruffled as you sleep and they will be ready to wear in the morning!
  • The Poof & Slay
This works very well for hair that is left natural. You can create an afro with your hair and then tie back the poof with a standard hair tie. Then, use some gel to push down the edges, giving them a sleek, glossy look.
  • The Water Wave
You can actually turn your edges into shapes, such as small moons or something similar. It’s surprisingly easy to do. Simply wet the edges and then style them into the desired shape with a little styling mousse.

This type of edge works perfectly if you have added some curls to your hair or even if you have been playing with extensions.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is simple. Your edges are there to be used, try out a variety of different options to see which one suits you and your head the most. It’s easy to do and a lot of fun. Best of all, although it works better with dark-coloured hair, anyone can try this and get great results.
