If you are living in a rental property, keeping it clean and spotless is typically part of your rental agreement. While that may sound like a lot of work, it is actually far easier than you think.
The first thing you should do is establish a schedule. This makes it far easier to track what you need to do, and also ensures you do it regularly. Whether it be vacuuming, dusting, or cleaning out your of your air purifiers by Alen, if it’s on a list, it is hard to miss.
A weekly schedule will also ensure your rental is close, or at least close to clean, if there are any inspections of the property.
You will more than likely have a couple of problem areas, and these will require extra attention as they could lead to damage, and you don’t want to be left footing the bill. The most common problem area will typically be the bathroom, because of water damage and mold.
If you don’t have an outright problem area, focus on where there could be one, such as under your sinks, in a laundry room, around a fireplace, etc.
The last thing you want to do is have to replace tiling or wood flooring because it has been damaged. Therefore, the best thing to do is to avoid this completely by putting down carpets and runners, and not doing anything that could lead to damage.
If you don’t want to do this, there are other steps you can take. For instance, putting soft feet on the feet of your couches will stop them from leaving marks. In the case of wood, if you spill anything on it, clean it up immediately using a cleaning product that won’t damage the varnish or wood.
Speaking of cleaning products, always double-check the ingredient list to make sure you don’t use anything that could damage delicate surfaces. Wall paint, for instance, can peel if you use something too corrosive.
Another prime example of this is using highly corrosive liquids to clean drains, which is incredibly common. If the pipes are made of plastic, you can cause severe damage that can easily lead to a burst pipe.
If you are able to keep pets, then you need to pay extra attention to how often you clean. While we love them, pets can cause serious damage to a rental property, or minor mess such as bringing dirt into the house constantly.
Therefore, if you have carpeted floors, you need to do a deep clean at least once a month. Other than that, be sure to keep them off built-in surfaces, as dog claws, for instance, can easily scratch wood surfaces.
While this is not something you would do during your tenancy but rather when it ends, it is important to know from the start. If you are able to put nails and hooks in your walls, choose the option that is the easiest to remove and cover-up.
Command Strips, for instance, are very renter-friendly and can be easily removed once you move out. There are also plenty of kits on the market that make filling in holes a breeze, and a quick coat of paint will make it disappear.
There are also a lot of preventative measures you can take to not only keep your place clean, but will also ensure you don’t have to do much cleaning. For instance, if you are worried about mold in the bathroom, investing in a dehumidifier will cut the chances of it forming.
As mentioned above, putting down carpets on wood surfaces is another easy, preventable measure that will save you a lot of money down the line.
If you have a garden, it will most likely be your responsibility to look after it. It is fairly easy to keep a garden neat and tidy, as long as you focus on maintenance, and not leaving it for a while and letting it get out of hand.
More than likely, you will just need to do some lawn mowing and trimming weeds, but if you need to do more than that, a couple of hours a month will be sufficient to get everything done.
Finally, don’t make the mistake of trying to repair or clean anything if you don’t know how. Reporting issues that may require professional help is more than acceptable, and the cost should be covered by the landlord.
This will also take the responsibility off your shoulders, especially if you report it before it gets too bad.
Finally, if you can afford it and you don’t have the time to clean, you can enlist the help of a cleaning service. Not only will they clean everything, but they will also clean spaces and areas that you may not notice.
You may also be able to deduct the cost of the cleaning service from your rent for that month, but that will depend on your rental agreement.
