At the beginning of this year the Daily Mail heralded the coconut as the new superfood. Zoe Harcombe, nutritionist, explained to the newspaper: "Coconuts are a perfect example of a natural, real food. They contain all the macronutrients – carbohydrate, fat and protein. As well as being absolutely delicious and full of natural fat, coconuts are a rich source of minerals, including copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and selenium."

Indeed, coconuts are becoming more and more popular and people are starting to realise the different ways this fruit can be integrated into everyday life.

1. Cook with it

Coconut oil has long been used for cooking in places such as Asia, but it is starting to be used more regularly in the West. A splash of coconut oil can help to increase your intake of good saturated fats and minerals.

Digested coconut oil has even been linked to lowering tooth decay. Researchers at Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland believe that it attacks the bacteria that causes decay, as it's a natural antibiotic.

David Zinczenko, nutrition and wellness editor at ABC News, said: "If you haven’t yet tried coconut oil, stop what you’re doing right now, grab a pen, and add it to the top of your grocery list."

The news provider explained that a small daily serving can boost the metabolism due to its high lauric acid content and medium chain triglycerides.

2. Rub it

Whether on your hair or body, you're probably going to want to start rubbing coconut oil on yourself. The high protein content is believed to keep skin healthy and repair tissues. Many people use it to repair cracked lips, tackle stretchmarks and even to remove makeup.

It also has benefits for hair and is believed to stimulate growth. According to the New Health Guide, it also binds protein in hair due to the fatty acids. This prevents breakage. Moisture is also sealed in, while it is also thought to improve blood circulation.

The Faith in Nature Shampoo is a great option to rejuvenate your hair. It's free from artificial colours and fragrances, parabens and SLES. It is also biodegradable, with the bottles made from recycled materials.

3. Look after your baby with it

Coconut oil is a great kind-to-skin lotion for babies. It's particularly great at getting rid of cradle cap. Just gently rub a small bit of oil into the forehead and watch the mark disappear. Some parents also use coconut oil as a nappy lotion.

There are also uses for new mums and some attest to the benefits of coconut oil for taking care of sore nipples.

4. Get rid of lice

If your child comes home with head lice, there may be no need to rush towards a harsh chemical product. Mixing coconut oil with apple cider vinegar has been claimed to kill lice Others saturate the hair in coconut oil, sleep in a shower cap and brush out the lice the next day.

5. Shave with it

Coconut oil can also be used as a gently shaving lotion, nourishing skin while providing a smooth surface for razors. Alternatively, use it as an aftershave lotion to soothe tired skin.
