Gifts your mum will appreciate

Mums are always hard to buy for, especially if you’re someone who likes to really surprise her year after year. But take a few moments to have a think while there’s still plenty of time left, and a great idea will leap into your head. Perhaps these ideas might help you too...

A one-off treat

Whether your mum loves spa days, Simply Red concerts or playing golf, there are a limitless number of days out you can buy her. Choose a different venue to those she may have been to before to make it feel extra special and unique. Perhaps she’s someone who’s always on the go and needs to let her hair down every now and then. In this case, an overnight retreat at a spa or a seaside hotel will give her no choice but to relax and enjoy herself.

Something that’ll last

It’s nice to give mum a gift you know she’ll see or use every day. A makeup box from the David Jones Boxing Day sale will not only be useful, but will also remind her of you every time she gets up in the morning and sees it on the dressing table. If she’s a keen gardener then a nice new set of gardening gloves is a gift she’ll enjoy all year. And if she loves flowers, but you’d rather get her something longer lasting, then try a flower subscription, where a new bouquet arrives on her doorstep every month.

Something that won’t!

No-one buys chocolate expecting it to still be there by Boxing Day. But that doesn’t stop you! Buying a personalised chocolate bar, or something extra special from an artisan chocolatier will allow a chocoholic mum to escape and enjoy a few moments of paradise. Alternatively, you could put together a hamper of all sorts of things she adores – jams, bubbly, smoked salmon, melt-in-the-mouth cookies – you can tailor it to her tastes so she knows how much thought you’ve put in to this year’s gift.

Something to wear

Christmas means winter, which means cold. And everyone appreciates something that takes the sting out of the festive chill. A hat and gloves made from merino wool will mean she’ll actually want to go outdoors when it’s -5 degrees! Alternatively, you can ensure she’s snug in bed by getting her some warm women’s nightwear.

Think about what your mum most loves and needs. Even if you believe you’ve ‘been there, done that’, there are always variations of a theme and new things to buy that can make this year’s gift as special as any great present you’ve bought her in the past.
