When a parent faces a difficult season, it can certainly feel unsettling. You’ve spent much of your life turning to them for comfort or advice. Suddenly, the roles are reversed. Maybe they’re recovering from surgery, moving homes, or simply struggling with the changes that come with age. Whatever the reason, your first step is to really see them as a person navigating loss, fear, or uncertainty. Do your best to listen without jumping in to fix everything. Let them share their worries, even if it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes the greatest comfort you can give is your attention. It’s natural to resist change. But aging brings a lot of it. New doctors, medications, lifestyle shifts. Staying flexible helps both you and your parent adapt more easily. Approach change with curiosity rather than fear.

Technology, for instance, can be a surprising source of comfort and connection. Video calls, health tracking apps, or even online exercise classes can open new doors. There are also emerging trends in hearing care and mobility aids that can make life more enjoyable and independent. Sometimes, the right tools can restore a sense of control and confidence your parent thought they’d lost.

 

Taking Care Of Yourself Too

Supporting someone else through a tough time is meaningful, but it can also be draining. Sadly, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Give yourself permission to rest, to ask for help, and to set healthy boundaries.

If you have siblings or extended family, share responsibilities. Let each person contribute in ways that make sense for them. Maybe you handle medical appointments, while someone else manages meals or bills. No one can do it all, and that’s okay.

Your parent may be facing challenges, but your compassion can help them feel grounded again. Supporting them isn’t about solving their every problem. It’s about showing up, staying kind, and reminding them they’re never walking alone. Having empathy with your older parents will make sure you take great care of them as they age.
