Looking at Foster Care from the Professional Aspect

Any job that entails caring for children who may have experienced trauma cannot be considered as just another job. Even so, there is a professional aspect to it as well. That may not be why you are considering working in foster care, but the system will expect some degree of professionalism from you. Let’s take a more detailed look through it all to help willing adults become more effective foster care providers.

The Professionalism Expected from a Foster Carer

There are no specific educational qualifications needed to become a foster carer,  adequate training will be provided by the foster care agency to help you take care of the children. However, if you are accepted and registered as a foster carer  for a foster care agency, , the agency will expect you to prioritise your care responsibilities for each child, above everything else.

You cannot hold a full-time job and ignore your fostering responsibilities in favour of your job at any point of time. You can contact the foster care agency for temporary relief during family emergencies, but it cannot be for the sake of holding on to another job. As a professional foster carer, fostering is supposed to be both legally and practically a caregiver’s first job.

The Allowance is a Professional Compensation

Fostering allowances paid to a registered caregiver who is working with the system is not just meant for the children in their care. Any allowance paid to a foster carer is supposed to:

  1. Take care of the children’s needs.
  2. Compensate the caregiver for their time and effort.

Exactly how much you will be paid as allowance is highly variable though. Your compensation amount will vary depending on several factors, which include, but are not limited to:

  1. The number of children under your care.
  2. The special needs of each child under your care, if applicable.
  3. Your qualifications/skills/experience when they match the specific needs of the children in care.
  4. The foster care agency you are working with currently.
  5. Your location or address.

Can You Hold Another Job While Working in Foster Care?

Unlike how you cannot be on the payroll of two private companies at the same time, the foster care system allows their carers a lot of leeway. What that means is, fostering does not have to be your only job, but that’s only applicable if you can take care of all your fostering duties properly and still have time left to hold a side job.

Any foster care agency that you sign up with will expect that you will not be taking advantage of their lenience by ignoring your primary responsibilities towards the children you care for. Doing so is not just unprofessional and not in the best interests of the children in your care.
