The debate about what to do with a spare room is one that many people can relate to. It was epitomised by the Friends episode in which Monica and Chandler are getting into an intense argument about whether to create a fancy guest room or a games room. 

Having a spare room is great as it means you have somewhere to store your stuff, helping to keep the rest of your home free from clutter. But as we also saw in the Friends episode where Chandler breaks into Monica’s store cupboard, the room we use to hide away the clutter eventually just becomes cluttered itself. 

But if you’d like to do more than just turn your extra space into something more than a dumping ground for the things you want out of sight and out of mind, then consider some of these ideas. 

Luxurious Games Room

There are many other people out there that, like Chandler Bing, think spare rooms make great places to play games. Now whether that means installing a table tennis table, a giant TV and console, a desk with a gaming PC, or a row of retro arcade machines will depend on the types of games you like to play. 

Regardless of the types of game you play, there is plenty of luxury furniture you can kit it out with. 

There are different styles you can choose too, which you may want to match the types of games you play. For example, if you’re an avid poker player or you’re currently getting to grips with the basics, you may want to host poker nights for friends in your games room. In which case, a felt table and some quality oak furniture will create a classic sophisticated look. 

Alternatively, if you’re into tech and love computer gaming, a clean white decor with storage that hides everything away to create a minimalist finish may suit the room better. 

Luxurious Gym

Many of us have bought fitness equipment at one point or other, only for it to become an expensive ornament or clothes hanger. However, if you enjoy working out regularly and want to avoid the hassle of having to travel to and from the gym, then making a gym at home might be the way forward.

Of course, you’ll want to make sure you have matching furniture that’s of good quality. If you’re going for a traditional look, solid wood is always a good option. Getting bedding that matches the decor is also important, you’ll also want to make sure there’s a nice collection of cushions.

Think about the small details: chocolates on their pillow, a bottle of water in case they get thirsty in the night, and maybe some small toiletry bottles like you’d find in a hotel. Also, remember that you’re in the 21st century, so make sure they have somewhere to charge their phone. If a socket isn’t close to the bed, consider running an extension cable. 

Luxurious Office

No matter whether you want somewhere to work from home, somewhere to write your novel, or somewhere to build your side hustle, an office in your spare room is a great way to separate work time from non-work time. 

While some people work from home by setting up a laptop on their kitchen table or by using a tiny desk in the corner of a room. But converting your spare room into a luxurious office can make work time more enjoyable and help you be more productive. 

How you style it will be down to your personal preference, but harnessing natural light can make the environment more pleasant. Getting comfortable furniture is also important, so invest in an office chair that offers good support for your back and allows you to sit upright while looking at your computer. 

You’ll also want to make sure you have plenty of storage so you don’t have to leave papers lying around everywhere. 

Whatever you want to use your spare room for, making it luxurious is easy and will increase your enjoyment of it.
