Luxury Dating Ideas Beyond Expensive Restaurants

The French Laundry in Yountville charges $425 per person for its standard tasting menu and $500 for its extended one, with service included and wine extra. For two people, the standard menu comes to $850 before anyone opens a bottle, and most diners should expect a total of $500 to $900 per person once wine and supplements are added.

Sunrise Balloon Flight, Napa Valley

Balloons over Napa Valley launch before sunrise, when the wind is calmest. The flight lasts about an hour and climbs as high as 2,000 feet, but check-in, inflation, pack-up and the ride back from the landing site bring the outing to 3 or 4 hours. Group flights start at about $280 per person, and a basket can carry 8 to 20 passengers.

A private flight for two costs about $2,000. It is the only version of the flight in which the couple has the basket to themselves. Every flight depends on the weather, and operators cancel when conditions are unsafe at launch, so a balloon date needs a backup plan for the morning. Some operators serve a sit-down breakfast after landing, which turns the flight into a full morning out.

Glass-Domed Train, Canadian Rockies

The Rocky Mountaineer's First Passage to the West runs between Vancouver and Banff over two days, traveling only in daylight and stopping overnight at a hotel in Kamloops. In GoldLeaf service, passengers ride in a bi-level coach with a glass dome and eat meals prepared by the train's executive chefs.

GoldLeaf fares for 2026 start at about CAD 3,729 per person in May and reach about CAD 4,000 in September, the most expensive month. This is a two-day date, with mountain views from morning to evening and every meal already arranged. The company also runs a two-day route in the United States, between Denver and Moab, Utah, with the same daylight-only schedule.

Helicopter Flight, Grand Canyon

Helicopter tours to the Grand Canyon leave from Las Vegas, and the time in the air is usually 25 to 50 minutes of a longer day that includes hotel pickup and ground time. As of May 2026, most adult fares ran from $350 to $700. Tours that land on the canyon floor averaged $619 and included a champagne toast and snacks. Half-day landing tours typically fly over Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam on the way out, with about 45 minutes in the air each way, and set down about 3,500 feet below the rim.

The advertised fare is rarely the full cost. Fuel surcharges of $15 to $35 per person, front-seat upgrades of $50 to $60 and West Rim entry fees of $99 or more are often added at booking. A couple comparing tours should add every fee to the base fare before choosing one.

Terrace Box, Hollywood Bowl

The boxes at the Hollywood Bowl come with folding chairs and a table. A Terrace Box usually seats 3 to 5 people, and a Garden Box seats 4 to 6. At Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts, guests may bring their own food and drink, including wine in glass bottles, although alcohol is not allowed at events the orchestra does not host. Box seats closest to the stage cost about $400.

A packed dinner and a bottle chosen at home, eaten in a box at a summer concert, is one of the luxury date ideas that lets two people set their own menu and budget. Garden and Terrace Box seats have ranged from about $80 to $180 per person this season. Two of them cost less than one tasting menu in Yountville.

Date Night at The Met, New York

The Metropolitan Museum of Art stays open until 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday for an evening program it calls Date Night. The galleries are open from 5 p.m., live music plays in rotation, and the cafes serve drink specials. Admission is pay-what-you-wish for New York residents.

The museum's own guide to Date Night at The Met points visitors to an Egyptian temple, Van Gogh's self-portrait and what the museum calls the largest collection of Vermeers in the world. Live performances come from a rotation of New York musicians working with the string quartet ETHEL, and every Date Night event is free with museum admission. The current exhibitions include Costume Art, the show behind the Met Gala, and Musical Bodies, which looks at the connections between the human body and musical instruments.

Stargazing at a Certified Dark Sky Place

DarkSky International certified its 250th International Dark Sky Place in 2025, the Lapalala Wilderness Nature Reserve in South Africa. The program began in 2001 with Flagstaff, Arizona, and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah became the first Dark Sky Park in 2007. The certified places now cover more than 196,000 square kilometers on six continents.

Starry nights are disappearing as outdoor lighting spreads. A study of more than 50,000 citizen observations from 2011 to 2022 found that the sky brightened by an average of 9.6% a year. At that pace, a person born where 250 stars were visible would see about 100 of them by age 18. Those naked-eye observations showed the sky brightening about 6 times faster than satellite data suggested, and researcher Christopher Kyba's team pointed to LED streetlights, whose blue light scatters farther than the light from older bulbs.

Sunrise at Haleakalā, Maui

The summit of Haleakalā, whose name means house of the sun, is 10,023 feet above sea level, and visitors drive up in the dark to watch the sunrise. Every vehicle entering the summit area between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. needs a sunrise reservation, which costs $1, opens 60 days in advance and is booked through Recreation.gov. Each driver parked in the four highest lots during those hours must carry one. The Haleakalā Conservancy notes that the reservation fee is separate from the park entrance fee, which is collected at the gate.

The Conservancy also warns that the summit is much colder than the beach and advises warm layers. A couple who books early and dresses for cold air can watch the sunrise for the price of a park pass and a $1 reservation.

The Price of Leaving the Restaurant

Leaving the restaurant does not reliably save money. The balloon and the train both cost more than a tasting menu for two, and the least expensive idea here starts with a 3 a.m. drive up a volcano.
