Ski trips are one of the most exciting types of vacation. Although they may be a far cry from the popular beach holiday, skiing vacations are perfect for anybody who enjoys exciting, adrenaline-pumping sports and wants to take in the stunning surroundings and views of many of the most popular ski destinations in the world. If you are planning a ski trip with friends, family, or even alone, you’re probably hoping to return home with a selection of stunning snapshots that you can share on social media or even put in a frame to keep in your home. So, we’ve shared some top tips and strategies used by professional photographers that you can use to get the best ski shots ever.

Digiscoping

If you’ve never heard of this term before and are wondering ‘what is digiscoping?’, then you have come to the right place. Digiscoping works by combining a device such as a smartphone or a tablet camera, or even a GoPro, with a powerful scope which will allow you to capture images that would be inaccessible from a short distance, for example, a close-up shot of your friend or family member skiing down the slopes!  It’s not just action shots that are improved with digiscoping, either – nature, bird, landscape, and even astrological photographers all use it!

Raise the ISO

If you’re going to be taking photographs of your skiing trip using a camera rather than a smartphone, tablet, or GoPro, then raising the ISO on your device will allow you to shoot at a higher shutter speed, improving your chances of capturing the perfect skiing action shot. To stop motion, professional sports photographers tend to use a shutter speed of around on thousandth of a second. So, the higher your camera’s shutter speed, the better results you will get. However, bear in mind that if you are using an older camera model, a higher ISO level could result in more noise in your photos.

Don’t Forget the Surroundings

Although you may be focusing hard on getting your nearest and dearest coming down the slopes in your shot, don’t forget the surroundings. On most skiing trips, budding photographers will be blessed with stunning backdrops of snow-covered mountains, blue skies, and greenery. So, be sure to capture as much of the surroundings as possible in your photographs, as this will really set the scene of your shots and produce stunning results.

Take the Right Equipment

Depending on the type of device that you are using to shoot photographs, it’s important that you take along the right equipment. If you are going to be photographing using a standard digital camera rather than a GoPro or your smart device, then a tripod may come in handy to stabilize the camera and avoid any movement in the image. You can also find tripods designed to be used with smart devices with a camera, such as your smartphone or tablet.
