Tazio Nuvolari, certainly a man of his time, remains an icon for the world of sport, a symbol of the passion to push beyond the limits of exertion, endurance and fate, ever focused on achieving excellence.
This was the personality trait which Eberhard & Co. particularly admired in the champion from Mantua when, exactly thirty years ago, in 1992, it decided to dedicate a collection of motor-inspired timepieces to him. This intuition led to the creation of a series of models very much loved by enthusiasts of beautiful watches and motors.
Tazio Nuvolari was born in 1892, just a handful of years after the founding of Eberhard & Co., experiencing the pioneers era in motor sport, that period between the 1920s and the 1940s when races were fought at unprecedented speeds even on dirty roads, in cars lacking any safety equipment. Nuvolari dominated throughout those epic times, at the cost of enormous sacrifice and forfeiting a great deal on a personal level, but at the same time, laying the foundations of a life which would become a legend.
To celebrate the 130th anniversary of the birth of this great champion and also 90 years from 1932, his golden year, when he won races and championships at the wheel of his 8-cylinder Alfa Romeo, Eberhard & Co. has undertaken a stunning restyling of the chronograph dedicated to him. This new Nuvolari brings together in its new case, of an unprecedented 41mm diameter, all the highlights of the collection, alongside numerous, innovative details.
The impressive dial boasts excellent readability, with its white Arabic numerals set against a black background that is further enriched by a helical finish and the beautifully embossed, classic carapace motif framing the initials of the champion. While the position of the two counters is retained at 12 and 6 o'clock, for the first time, the counters themselves are available also in white, offering an added, sporting touch. The tachymeter scale on the rehaut features a new yellow detail, the colour of his “lucky charm”, the sweater that Nuvolari always wore while racing, together with the turtle-shaped brooch that Gabriele D'Annunzio had given him. The same shade of yellow is repeated on the tip of the chronograph seconds hand. The captivating engine-turned finish, evoking the motoring world, on both bezel and case back remains unchanged. Held down by eight screws, the case back is available in two versions : closed and 'vitré'. This version allows the automatic movement to be visible, further customised with a gold reproduction of the historic Alfa Romeo Tipo 12/C in which the great driver won so many races. The weight is engraved with the dates 1892-2022, in memory of the 130 anniversary of the driver’s birth. The watch comes with a leather strap and will be available from November at Eberhard & Co. authorised dealers.
