Ted Turner Expeditions Adds Armendaris Bat Flight to Growing Roster of Eco-adventures

The newly launched Ted Turner Expeditions has announced the addition of the Armendaris Bat Flight expedition to its growing roster of unique eco-tourism offerings in New Mexico. Based out of the Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa in Truth or Consequences, Ted Turner Expeditions will for the first time grant access to the general public to this thrilling seasonal spectacle.  

The Armendaris Bat Flight takes guests to Ted Turner's private Armendaris Ranch, where an estimated 1.6 million bats (mostly of the Mexican Free Tail variety) emerge from two massive lava caves at dusk to feed, every evening from June to September. Described as a "river of bats" in the sky, the nightly phenomenon is a rare opportunity to view bats in their natural habitat as well as other opportunistic predatory species who take advantage of the bat bounty each evening.  

The five-hour Armendaris Bat Flight expedition departs the Sierra Grande Lodge at 4:30PM* and takes guests on a two-hour exploration through the expansive 360,000-acre Armendaris Ranch before reaching the bat caves. Other wildlife sighting opportunities include bison, pronghorn, oryx, and various other animals native to the Chihuahuan desert. Expert guides from Ted Turner Expeditions accompany each outing to provide educational insight.

Group tours start at $275 per person and include a packed dinner at the Armendaris Ranch. Private tours can be arranged for a supplemental $150 per trip (both require a two-person minimum).

    • Healing Waters Trail Morning Hike - A guided 3.25-mile morning hike that includes the historic downtown district, the Hot Springs District, and the Hamilton Military Museum, home to one of the original traveling Vietnam Memorial Walls. Armendaris Ranch:

  • Fra Cristobal Summit Tour - A five-hour driving tour to the summit of the Fra Cristobal Range, with highlights including lofty views of Elephant Butte Reservoir and the Rio Grande corridor. **
  • Spellmeyer Canyon Tour - A five-hour hike in Spellmeyer Canyon, featuring marine fossils and rock scrambles.**

Ladder Ranch:

  • Animas Creek / Ranch Heritage Tour - A three- to five-hour expedition through the 156,439-acre ranch, whose highlights include Native American artifacts, ancient petroglyphs and turn-of-the-century ruins of an adobe home. **
  • Las Palomas North and South Loop Tour - A photographer's dream, the five-hour trek features a tour of Palomas Creek, a pristine riparian habitat, and various wildlife encounters including bison, elk, deer, peccary (javelin) and other native animal species.**
