Topic of the Month: The Energy Crisis puts mechanics at the forefront.

You could wear a mechanical watch in protest against the war, you could wear one to counter climate change—because after all: every contribution, however small it may be, helps. The reason is simple: mechanical watches—such as those from NOMOS Glashütte—generate the little bit of energy they need themselves with the help of their wearer, as mechanical watches contain a movement, like the one pictured above, which is wound either by hand (by turning the crown) or automatically (through movement of the wrist). This movement (a mechanism also known as a caliber) consists of bridges, cogs, springs, gears and other tiny parts. And energy is not only produced in the watch, but it can also be stored—without any batteries. The tension spring accumulates the power and then gradually releases it (across hours, minutes and seconds) to the hands that display the time on the dial. Once a mechanical watch like this has been purchased, it works at no cost and with extremely little maintenance. And that makes us happy—both in times of crisis and in better times.
