Washington, DC area Hotels Help Local Kids Get a Good Start for the School Year

As fall approaches, thousands of kids from Fairfax County in Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC, are starting to prepare for the upcoming school year. New school supplies are a staple for the start of the school year for kids across the nation. Not all the families in the shadow of the nation’s capital have the finances to give their children the proper essentials. That’s where, through a local charity, two local hotels, the Sheraton Reston Hotel and the Westin Reston Heights, are stepping in to help.

The annual backpack drive is one of the programs executed by Cornstones (formally known as Reston Interfaith), a forty four year old nonprofit that helps neighbors in need overcome tough economic times. Like most charities, Cornerstones relies heavily on corporate support. “This is the third year of volunteering on the backpack drive. Giving back is one of the core values of our hotels as well as Crescent Hotels & Resorts, our management company,” stated Tim Bailey, Complex General Manager who oversees both hotels. Crescent Hotels manage over 100 hotels throughout the United States and Canada, including sixteen hotels in the Washington, DC area.

Bailey has challenged each department at both of these Reston hotels to donate one backpack each. “We make it fun. Our team really enjoyed gathering the needed supplies for each backpack last year,” said Bailey. “We have great teams here. They really care about our guests and the community we all live in as well. Throughout the year I have had team members asking if we will be participating in the drive again. With that kind of enthusiasm we had to help out such a great cause.”

For the backpack drive, Cornerstones partners up with another organization called Kids R First and they have set their goal to raise 3,200 backpacks in order to equip 90 schools in Reston, Herndon and other Fairfax County Schools.

This year when the school bell rings thousands more children in the local community of Fairfax County will be ready to learn and continue to head toward a bright future thanks to two hotels and various other active community members.
