Canada's Sonora Resort Opens for the 2016 Season

Sonora Resort, one of Canada’s top luxury wilderness retreats, is officially open for its 14th season. Located within the secluded Discovery Islands in British Columbia, Sonora Resort launches a new Cultural Tour by the Homalco First Nation this year, as well as several new Island Currents Spa treatments that really aims to honour the traditions of Canada.

“At Sonora Resort, we always want to celebrate the best of the region, especially the roots of the West Coast,” explains Wynne Powell, Sonora Resort president and CEO. “Nature plays a huge role, as well as our heritage. This is why we decided to add the new Cultural Tour by the Homalco First Nation to our list of activities this year. It is a natural fit as we partner with the Homalco for our grizzly bear watching during the fall.”

The Cultural Tour by the Homalco First Nation commences in June. Guests have the rare opportunity to visit a First Nation reserve and connect with their traditional lands. The tour includes the opportunity to paddle a Salish-designed canoe, witness a cedar weaving demonstration, visit with a Homalco artist, take a peek into its on-site wild salmon hatchery, see the grizzly bear platforms, and learn about the Homalco culture. A traditional Homalco seafood feast completes the day trip.

“We have been working with the Homalco First Nation since 2002, and it has been an enriching experience,” says Sean Ross, vice president of Sonora Resort. “Homalco means ‘people of turbulent, or fast running’ water. They have a very long and interesting history in the Pacific Northwest. Our hope is our guests can feel further connected to the area surrounding Sonora Resort during their visit.”

In addition to the new Cultural Tour, Island Currents Spa, Sonora Resort’s award-winning stand-alone spa, has added several new treatments to its portfolio, including the Pacific Elements Experience and Peaceful Warrior:

The Pacific Elements Experience is based on an authentic local tradition of cleansing, the four elements —Fire, Earth, Wind and Water are incorporated. A dry exfoliation of the body and a Coastal Beach Stone Massage is followed by a relaxing soak in the Bouvier Hydrotherapy Tub.

The Peaceful Warrior is a true Pacific Northwest experience that transforms mind, body, and spirit by incorporating longstanding local ancestral tradition. Heated beach stones are combined with exotic salts to create a heavenly sensation and effective exfoliation of the body followed by a personalized, Valmont facial using cold jade stones to promote circulation and natural radiance.

Executive Chef Terry Pichor continues to share with guests the bounty of the Pacific West Coast with seasonal and global ingredients. A new outdoor wood fire pizza oven has also been installed on the deck, offering guests a whole new menu, possible unique cooking classes, and a variety of dish options.
