Camping has been around for as long as humans have sought shelter from the elements and a place to live in. Tents originally served as homes, but with the rise of farming, stronger and more durable structures became the norm for living in. However, tents were still used especially by the traveling armies and nomadic tribes. They might have been a survival necessity, but today, tents are mainly used for recreation since they're essential tools when it comes to camping and hiking. Traditional tent camping is a really fun way to relax, unplug, and simply reconnect with nature. On the other hand, for some people, camping can be an uncomfortable experience. Some people are not willing to sacrifice comfort and they just don't like sleeping on the ground and being cold. But, what if you didn't have to sacrifice your comfort when camping in the great outdoors?

What is Glamping

Glamping basically means glamorous or luxurious camping and it is the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors without having to sacrifice comfort and style. Glamping involves all the little luxuries of home or a five star hotel and glampers usually stay in luxury camping tents, yurts, tipis, or luxury caravans. Glamping has become one of the hottest trends in the last few years and it's ideal for people who want to spend some time in nature, but they want to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

The History of Glamping

Glamping is not a new concept and even though the term has been around since 2005, glamping dates back over a thousand years. The first glamorous camping setups were first seen in the 16th century, when the Scottish Earl of Atholl welcomed his guests with  huge and extravagant tents that were filled with lavish items and furniture from his home. The trend continued when the Ottoman Turks created an entire team of skilled craftsmen to travel with their military forces just to set up and maintain their luxurious palatial tents.

Glamping continued to develop and in the early 1990s, the wealthy travelers from America and Europe started to go on holidays and safaris in Africa very often. But, they didn't want to sacrifice their comfort and luxury at all, so their safari expeditions included  spacious, lavish tents which were equipped with the finest linens, plush beds, folding baths, electric generators, cases of champagne, and all the luxuries they were accustomed to. Glamping then spread throughout North America and Europe and became extremely popular among all groups of people.

The Differences Between Camping and Glamping

The main difference between camping and glamping is the level of comfort. While regular camping usually involves a simple tent and a sleeping bag, glamping or "boutique camping", as it is called, involves more comfort and luxury. Glamping is for people who don't want to give up comfort and amenities and even though they'll be spending time in nature, they still want to sleep on a huge, comfortable bed, have a toilet, electricity, a shower room, and hot water. When it comes to cooking, most campers keep it simple and cook over a campfire. On the other hand, a lot of glamping sites nowadays have a restaurant, so glampers don't need to think about cooking and they can still enjoy home cooked delicious meals. So, whether you like the ruggedness and simplicity of standard camping, or you prefer the more posh type of camping, it's undeniable that glamping is a booming trend that continues to grow fast.

DIY Glamping

Even though nowadays you can easily book a glamping holiday through a business that will take care of all the work and planning for you, you can also create your own cozy and stylish set up. If you're a creative person and you have the right equipment and an eye for style, you can easily turn your camping trip into glamping. One of the most important things you need to do first is to invest in a high-quality bell tent. Then you can make your tent more magical by adding fairy lights or lanterns. Lay down a blanket that you brought from your home or a few colorful rugs and add floor cushions to create a homely and cozy atmosphere. You can also dress up your camping dinner table with a cute table cloth, a few candles, or a simple vase with wildflowers. Keep in mind that a little bit of creativity and effort definitely goes a long way.
