The Quieter Side of Luxury on Morocco’s Atlantic Coast

Essaouira offers a different kind of Moroccan luxury: Atlantic light across whitewashed walls, a beautifully prepared fish lunch, and an afternoon with nothing more urgent than finding the best sea view. Beyond Marrakech’s courtyards and busy souks, this coastal city invites you to loosen the itinerary. Why rush when the ocean sets such a persuasive pace?

The journey west gradually changes the mood. City traffic gives way to open country, with argan trees scattered across the landscape. By the time Essaouira’s walls come into view, the prospect of a quiet courtyard and a room above the lanes feels especially appealing.

Choose a restored riad within the medina if you want to explore on foot. Look beyond decorative photographs: a sheltered terrace, thoughtful soundproofing, and help arranging transfers can contribute more to your stay than an elaborate lobby. The coastal wind makes a protected outdoor corner particularly valuable.

An Afternoon Behind the Walls

Begin with an unhurried walk through the Medina of Essaouira, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its relatively orderly streets offer a different experience from the more intricate lanes of some Moroccan medinas, while white facades and blue shutters create an unmistakably coastal setting.

There’s pleasure in looking closely. A doorway frames a tiled courtyard; a shop displays bowls with beautifully irregular grain. In workshops working with thuya wood, the attraction lies as much in the material’s swirling patterns as in the finished boxes and furniture. Ask before photographing artisans at work.

Resist buying everything on the first walk. Stop for mint tea, get your bearings, and return to the pieces that still hold your attention. A carefully chosen object, with its maker and material understood, carries more meaning than a bag filled in haste.

By late afternoon, follow the streets toward the harbor. Blue fishing boats gather against the working waterfront, gulls circle overhead, and the city’s polished interiors give way to a saltier, livelier scene. This is a working place, not a stage set; keep clear of unloading crews and ask before taking close-up portraits.

The ramparts provide another perspective, with stone defenses facing the Atlantic and waves breaking below. Bring a light layer even on a sunny day. The breeze that makes the coast so refreshing can quickly change the temperature once you step into an exposed viewpoint.

Dinner Without the Rush

Return to your riad while there’s still time to enjoy the terrace. Back in your room, a familiar Bare Minerals foundation and a favorite lip color are all you might want before heading out to dinner. There’s little reason to make the evening complicated.

A well-chosen restaurant can continue the day’s coastal theme. Ask what fish is available, how it will be cooked, and whether the quoted price is per portion or by weight. Grilled fish, seasonal vegetables, and good bread need little embellishment when the kitchen handles them well.

For a more intimate evening, ask whether your riad offers dinner in its courtyard. Confirm the menu beforehand, particularly if you have dietary requirements. Candlelight and attentive service feel more generous when you can settle in without another transfer or reservation across town.

Beyond the City Walls

The following morning belongs to the beach. Essaouira’s broad sands invite a long walk, although wind and surf mean this isn’t always a destination for motionless sunbathing. Watch the conditions before planning water activities, and choose qualified local instruction if kiteboarding appeals.

For another way to explore, arrange a guided horseback ride along suitable stretches of coast. Be honest about your riding experience, request a helmet, and choose an operator whose horses appear well cared for. Beginners should ask for a quiet, walking-paced outing rather than a dramatic gallop.

Back in town, the Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah Museum adds cultural context to the scenery. Check current opening arrangements before visiting, then leave time afterwards to browse a cooperative selling argan oil and ask about its origin and intended use.

If your legs need a reward after the beach, reserve a hammam treatment. Ask what the bathing and exfoliation involve, choose a pressure level that suits you, and leave the next hour blissfully unbooked.
