The Royal Automobile Club is on the hunt for the very best of the best in the British historic motoring and motorsport world, with nominations invited for the Club’s fifth annual Historic Awards: these awards give both those professionally involved in this industry and classic motoring enthusiasts alike the opportunity to nominate the truly exceptional people, companies, events, and achievements they feel deserve recognition.

Eligibility is based on achievements made within the period between 1 October 2022 and 30 September 2023 and nominations close on 1 October. Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by a third party.

Nominations are made through a simple online form on the Awards’ website and the winners will be revealed at a glittering awards’ evening at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall on Thursday, 23 November.

The following categories are open for nominations:

  • Collection – recognising achievements by museums large and small or by privately-owned collections. The 2022 winner in this category was the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum.
  • Competitive Event – this covers everything from race meetings and stage rallies to hillclimbs, regularity trials, race series and even individual races. In 2022 this award was presented to Rally the Globe Generations Rally.
  • Innovation – rewarding initiative and creativity in the development of new products and services. The 2022 winner in this category was the TR Register’s European Breakdown App.
  • Motoring Spectacle – for classic motoring events of all sizes, with no element of timed competition. Eligible events include concours d’elegance, tours, club gatherings and classic vehicle shows. In 2022 this award was presented to the Austin Seven Centenary Celebration.
  • Outstanding Journalism – for the very best print, digital or broadcast feature in a UK-based media outlet. The 2022 winner in this category was Mark Dixon, for his feature ‘Preferred Carrier’, which appeared in Octane.
  • Personal Endeavour – celebrating individual achievement within the historic motoring or motorsport world. The 2022 recipients of this award were Simon Diffey and Sarah Jane Adams-Diffey.
  • Restoration – recognising the superlative skill, research and sensitivity to a vehicle’s history that makes a world-class restoration. It will be fascinating to see what succeeds the 2022 winner - Transport Museum Wythall’s magnificent 1931 AEC Regent 486 double-decker bus!
  • Young Achiever – the future of Britain’s historic motoring industry lies in its rising stars, aged 18-30, and this award celebrates these young individuals, from apprentices, restorers and engineers to club officials, motorsport competitors and writers. The 2022 winner of this award was William Heynes.

The Historic Awards are renowned for their expert, independent, rigorous judging process. Each category is assessed by its own handpicked, specialist judging panel, headed by its own Lead Judge. This year’s Lead Judges are Sarah Bennett-Baggs (Editor, Auto Addicts and an active historic motorsport competitor), Alastair Clements (Editor-in-Chief, Classic & Sports Car), Steve Cropley (Editor-in-Chief, Autocar), David Lillywhite (Editorial Director, Magneto), Vanessa Marçais (historic motorsport organiser), Lizzie Pope (Associate Editor, Classic & Sports Car), Simon Taylor (journalist, author, publisher, motor racing commentator and car collector) and Ian Titchmarsh (motorsport commentator and Trustee of Silverstone Heritage).

At the Awards’ evening on 23 November, the Club will also present the Royal Automobile Club Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of an individual who has made a remarkable contribution to British motoring and/or motorsport heritage over many decades. Last year’s recipient was Simon Taylor, for his unique experience, deep insight, and a career that’s mixed motoring traditions with media innovation.

The Awards are a continuation of the Club’s 125-year pedigree in recognising motoring accomplishments. Today, the Club presents a series of internationally recognised accolades, including the Segrave Trophy, the Torrens Trophy, the Simms Medal, the Dewar Trophy and the oldest trophy in motorsport - the Tourist Trophy.
