When it comes to culture and history, it’s difficult to compete with Europe. The various nations and people, and the way that they’ve interacted over the centuries, have helped to shape not only world history, but American history, too. Pay a visit to the continent, and you’ll get the excitement that comes with novelty – but you might also recognize a little bit of what you find, there.

This year, favorable exchange rates have helped to bolster the continent’s appeal still further. So, what’s on offer, and where’s worth visiting?

 

Paris, France – Art, Food, and Iconic Landmarks

When it comes to iconic city breaks, Paris has an appeal that’s difficult to beat. Amazing museums like the Louvre are home to some of the world’s most famous masterpieces, and a few lesser-known ones, too. And, of course, there are iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower.

The public transport system is approachable, and many of the city’s most famous districts can be easily navigated on foot. While you’re in the city, you’ll want to make time to sample the culinary traditions. Track down a local bakery and enjoy a jambon beurre.

 

Croatia – Coastlines, Islands, and Medieval Cities

Croatia holds an appeal that’s akin to that of many other Mediterranean countries – but the crowds are a little sparser, and your money will tend to go a little further. During tours to Croatia, you can expect amazing historic towns, and plenty of obscure little islands along the Dalmatian coast. Travel to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, and you’ll find several memorable filming locations from Game of Thrones.

 

Italy – History, Food, and Picture-Perfect Cities

When it comes to sheer variety of experience, Italy is a destination that’s difficult to argue with. You might explore the Vatican City and the Colosseum in Rome, before venturing to the labyrinth of canals that is Venice. Of course, there’s also the rolling hills and vineyards of Tuscany.

Wherever you visit, you’ll get a different take on classic Italian dishes. Try pizza in Naples, or pasta in Bologna.

 

Spain and Portugal – Affordable, Sunny, and Culturally Rich

For most European travelers, the Iberian Peninsula is a go-to destination thanks to reliable year-round sunshine. The food in Spain and Portugal is fantastic, and the value for money is compelling, too. Major cities like Lisbon and Barcelona appeal for different reasons – you might travel the tram network of the former, and marvel at the iconic cathedral of the latter.
